Madison-based Mithridion gets orphan drug designation for leading compound

Congratulations to Mithridion, a Madison drug development company headed by MadREP board member Trevor Twose, on receiving orphan drug designation for its leading compound, MCD-386CR.

Excerpted from the Wisconsin State Journal (May 9, 2010):

The drug is intended to treat progressive supranuclear palsy, or PSP, a degenerative brain disease that affects balance, walking, speech, cognition and eye movements.

Getting orphan drug status gives MCD-386CR seven years of market exclusivity as a treatment for PSP, if it eventually is approved by federal regulators, said Mithridion chief executive Trevor Twose.

Madison Region Worksite Wellness Week

Worksite Wellness Week is a local awareness week designed to celebrate our region’s dedication to employee wellness programs.

The worksite has become an ideal setting for health promotion, due to rising healthcare costs, the increasing incidence of preventable health conditions, and the fact that the average adult spends 8-12 hours a day at work. Employers across the region are engaging in worksite wellness with positive results in employee health, reduced absenteeism, and increased productivity, engagement, and retention.

Your business can participate in Worksite Wellness Week by offering a health-related education, promotion, or activity for your employees; or by attending a training session on effective worksite wellness programs.

Worksite Wellness Week is hosted by the Madison Region Healthcare Leadership Collaborative in partnership with MadREP. Wellness Week coincides with Employee Health and Fitness Month in May 2011.

MadREP receives $97,500 EDA grant

The U.S. Economic Development Administration awarded MadREP a $97,500 grant to begin the process of obtaining a federally-approved Economic Development District (EDD) designation for the Madison Region.

This designation will create much-needed funding opportunities, including seed money for revolving loan funds, planning grants, and infrastructure funding. With more than seven EDDs already in Wisconsin covering 85 percent of the State, the attainment of this EDD designation will cover the important missing piece of the Madison Region.

The EDA grant money will enable MadREP to complete the first step of becoming an EDD by creating a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). This strategy is intended to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an economic roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy. The CEDS will support private capital investment and job creation in the region while serving as a guide for establishing regional goals and objectives, developing and implementing a regional plan of action, and identifying investment priorities and funding sources.
