EQUIPPING STUDENTS WITH SKILLS TO THRIVE IN TODAY’S GLOBAL ECONOMY

To be well prepared for jobs of the 21st century, today’s students must have access to hands-on experience and training, allowing them to put into practice concepts they have learned in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) courses. Increasingly, this type of learning requires equipment such as 3D printers, laser engravers, computer numerical control routers and plasma cutters.

Through the Fabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) Grant Program, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) is helping to outfit public schools across the state with this type of equipment, which helps students master the skills that are in high demand in the job market. Collaboration is a key feature of these labs, with schools throughout Wisconsin and round the world communicating to share ideas.

The Fab Labs grant application period is now open, with applications due by December 15.

HOW IT WORKS

WEDC will provide grants of up to $25,000 to eligible Wisconsin public school districts, or up to $50,000 to consortia of two or more public school districts, for the creation and/or expansion of fabrication laboratories within the school district(s). The funds may be used to purchase equipment used for instructional and educational purposes by elementary, middle, junior or high school students.

Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium

The 2016 Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium will be held Nov 16-17 at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center in Madison. Close to 600 people are anticipated to attend the conference from across the state and beyond, and will offer more opportunities than ever before for companies to interact with angel and venture investors from Wisconsin and well beyond.

In addition to the Wisconsin Angel Network presentation track and the ever-popular Elevator Pitch Olympics, this year’s conference will debut a speed-dating segment — “Investor Intros” — that will allow entrepreneurs to introduce themselves and their ideas to investors.

As always, the Early Stage Symposium will feature plenty of informative and inspiring speakers, panel discussions, networking and much more.

More than 40 companies will have an opportunity to make presentations and meet with investors, along with other entrepreneurs and business leaders. Many firms have cited participation in the conference as a key factor for significant business growth. Nearly 500 companies have presented during this fall conference in one format or another over the years, including some of the largest technology companies that call Wisconsin home.
