Bioscience

The Madison Region is an innovation center in the biosciences sector. The region claims an array of groundbreaking discoveries in life sciences and biotechnology including the discovery of vitamins to the first human embryonic stem cells grown in a laboratory. Our biosciences sector is driven largely by UW-Madison, which ranks in the top ten nationwide for federal research funds with over $1 billion in expenditures, more than half of which is spent directly in biosciences. With R&D at its core, major life science firms—both mature and startup— have chosen to build headquarters in the Madison Region. Support institutions such as BioForward pair with resources for incubation, clinical trials, and scientific testing to help biotech discoveries move from the lab to the marketplace.

Location Quotient (LQ) is a way of discovering the industries or occupations that are truly unique and specialized in your regional economy (compared to the national average). For example, if the commercial bakeries industry in your city accounts for 2.5% of jobs but only 1% of jobs nationally, then the city’s commercial bakeries have an LQ of 2.5, which means that this industry is 2.5x more concentrated in the region than the typical region.
