WIN Luncheon: Pokemon Go… or No?

With the school year underway and many parents hoping to replace “screen time” with homework time, the Sept. 27 meeting of the Wisconsin Innovation Network will focus on the pros and (occasional) cons of online games and learning.

Two gaming companies and two academic experts will discuss educational games and what current research says about how it affects learning and other behaviors, particularly in younger users.

Presenters are Dan White, co-founder of Filament Games and a founding member of Games+Learning+Society at UW-Madison; Mary Romolino, co-founder of Acme Nerd Games, which teaches nutrition through its inaugural game, “Houston, We Have Spinach;” David Gagnon, director of the Field Day Lab at the UW-Madison Wisconsin Institute for Discovery; and Richard Halvorson, a UW-Madison education professor who co-founded Games+Learning+Society and is a renowned researcher in the field.

“The ‘Pokémon Go’ craze is the latest example of how games can both entertain and educate, even if the education part is sometimes lost on parents whose kids have their noses buried in a screen,” said Tom Still, president of the Tech Council. “We’ll have fun learning about gaming and hear from some homegrown Wisconsin companies.”
